Description:

Paying tribute to a man rightly remembered as one of Australia's greatest explorers – this unique Australian legal tender $1 coin from the Royal Australian Mint has been issued in honour of Sir Douglas Mawson (1882-1958).

The fifth issue in the popular Inspirational Australians Series, the RAM could hardly have selected a more deserving candidate to be the subject of this one-year-only al-bronze $1 type. Although achieving a great many things in his lifetime, Mawson's name is inextricably linked with his heroic, death-defying deeds whilst exploring Antarctica. A member of Shackleton's legendary expedition in 1908, Mawson also led the first Australian expedition to Antarctica in 1911 – a mission marked by the loss of two comrades, with Mawson himself coming perilously close to death. Leading two further extremely valuable Antarctic expeditions in his 40s, it was largely due to Mawson's efforts that more than 40% of Antarctica is owned and protected by Australia.

Whilst an affordable way to pay tribute to a truly inspirational Australian, this sparkling new Uncirculated coin will naturally be targeted by serious decimal enthusiasts. Not to be issued for circulation and therefore never to be found in your change, this is the only place you will find this unique type. A small price to pay to keep your decimal collection complete, the Official Issue Price has been set at a mere A$13.50, with each 25mm $1 housed in an official RAM card.
