Portrait in oil of an officer in naval dress uniform on stout card 190x230mm, the surface badly deteriorated and the top pierced with a string inserted for hanging, reinforced on the back with a Colony of Victoria document fragment concerning shipping and imports dated c.1850, and re-housed within a very old and dilapidated glazed timber frame of crude construction. Biographical notes on the back of the frame "Sir John Turner of the Royal Navy, banished to Australia in reign of George IV for plotting to help Queen Caroline to leave England, Chib(?) remembered sitting on his knee when he visited their home". Whilst the condition is poor, this is one of the few lifetime portraits of a convict transported to the Australian colonies to come onto the market, and is extremely desirable as such. An extract of the "New Newgate Calendar" description of the trial of John Flynn is included with the lot Illustrated without frame John Turner Flynn entered the Royal Navy at a young age, and in the course of his long service, was noted to have behaved with much gallantry. Having obtained the rank of Lieutenant, he was engaged by Her Majesty Queen Caroline - consort of King George IV - as commander of a yacht in which the Queen took frequent excursions during her residence on the Continent. On her return to England Lieutenant Flynn was examined as a witness before the House of Lords in the course of an enquiry into the conduct of Her Majesty. Flynn was supposed by many to have been conferred a knighthood for his exertions in favour of the government, and was generally known as Sir John Flynn. In 1840, in the course of receiving commissions for payment of prize money to services personnel, he was found guilty on a charge of forgery with intent to defraud the Commissioners of Chelsea Hospital with a recommendation of mercy. He was sentenced to Transportation for Life at age 50
