Essendon Football Club; ornate sterling silver prize fob of the Australasian Athletic Amateur Championships for "Putting the Weight", an unusual design featuring caduceus adorned with laurel branches and three shields emblazoned 'NSW', 'V' and 'NZ', the reverse engraved "A.T.Thurgood, 2nd, Melbourne 9th November 1893", the name engraving A.T.Thurgood evidently an error for A.J.Thurgood but a fine Athletics award to a recipient who would soon become one of the most noted footballers of his time, beautifully engraved and with lovely toning and patina, gVF (research notes and reproduction photo included with lot) In the National Competition records, Albert Thurgood is shown as born 11 January 1874 and achieving the results in the 1893-94 competition of Second in the Shot Put (35'4¾") (for which this fob was awarded), and Third in the Hammer Throw (69'7½"). Australian Dictionary of Biography lists Albert John Thurgood, born at North Melbourne 11 January 1874, joined the Essendon Football Club 1892-1894, 1899-1902 and again in 1906; also played for Fremantle 1895-1898. He played during Essendon's run of four successive premierships (1891-94). The peak of his career came with the 1901 grand final against Collingwood, where, in one of his finest performances, he kicked three of his side's six goals and was a major contributor to Essendon's victory. He was considered a champion of his era and was a prodigious kick, including a measured place kick at the East Melbourne ground on 22 June 1899 of 107 yards (98.48m), the longest kick of all time. He was the first player to kick more than 50 goals in a season (1892) and in one game against Richmond in 1893 scored twelve of the team's fourteen goals. He headed the goal-kicking list in 1900 (25) and 1902 (33). Having retired from the game in 1902 Thurgood made a short comeback in 1906 but an ankle injury forced his permanent retirement. After football he became active in horse racing, gaining a Third Place in the 1921 Melbourne Cup with Amazonia. He was killed in a motor car accident in Toorak in 1927.
