Wreck of the Tek Sing, green glazed block print bowls with bold print 270mm (2 bowls)The Chinese junk 'Tek Sing' set out from the trading port Amoy (modern Xiamen) in early January 1822, headed for Batavia. It was a huge vessel by the standards of the day, designed for long ocean voyages under enormous sail in monsoonal winds. On board was a large cargo of Dehua porcelain and around 1800 people, mostly migrant workers. On 6th February as it neared Indonesia the ship struck the Belvidere Reef in the Gaspar Strait and heeled over onto its side, throwing many into the water before it sank. The next day 200 people were rescued by a passing ship but approximately 1600 were lost, placing the Tek Sing in the five worst maritime disasters in terms of loss of life, exceeding the better known Titanic disaster. The wreck site was discovered in 1999 and the cargo Qing Dynasty porcelain was brought to the surface after being on the sea bed for nearly two centuries. After decades of being submerged in darkness of the ocean depths some pieces have developed a calcified marine coating giving them added character while others remain as fresh as the day they were packed into the ship's hold before the fateful voyage got underway |
