On 8th April 1933 Western Australia voted 2:1 in favour of seceding from the Federation of Australia (the Goldfields made up the largest group to vote against). On the basis of majority vote the State Government sent a delegation to Westminster but the Imperial Government refused to intervene on the issue, citing that the referendum had been conducted by State and not Federal parliament
