Description:

Ruling during the dark days of the Crisis of the Third Century, Probus fought valiantly against both foreign powers and those seeking to usurp his role as emperor.

Probus enjoyed a relatively long reign for the time, as an astonishing 32 men ruled the Empire from 235AD to 284AD. Of those, thirty were killed in battle, or assassinated by their own soldiers. It was this last-mentioned fate that befell Probus.

The emperor had used the military for a variety of public works, as he sought to re-establish some form of stability across the Roman Empire.

Draining marshes, building roads and planting grapes may have been crucial to recovery, but Probus' soldiers were naturally more eager for war than creating infrastructure for the Empire. In the autumn of 282AD, Probus was murdered by a band of mutinous soldiers, ending a reign distinguished by considerable military success.

Handstruck more than 1,700 years ago, this genuine Ancient Roman Bronze Antoninianus is a compelling and affordable artefact of Emperor Probus' time in power.
