Description:

The ultimate acquisition for the true connoisseur, Downies is delighted to be able to offer the rare 1938 Proof Set, together with the 1938 Crown Proof, at a dramatically reduced price!

Issued to celebrate Australia’s then new coin designs, the 1938 Proof Set is unquestionably rare. The entire issue is believed to have comprised approximately 70 sets!

Before the creation of an annual collector program in 1955, Proof coinage in Australia was struck for archival purposes, and to share with other public institutions. Only sporadically were Proof coins struck on a commercial basis, and, even then, it was nothing like the mass production of Proof Sets underpinning modern numismatics.

The 1938 Proof Set mintage is typical of pre-WWII ‘commercial’ Proof issues. A mintage of seventy is tiny, but, importantly, the number of complete sets still in existence is infinitesimal. In large part, that is because a great number have been broken up, with the coins sold individually.

As a result, the 1938 Proof Set is seldom seen as a complete 6-coin set, as here. Officially graded and slabbed by PCGS, this flawless set includes the halfpenny in PR63 Red & Brown, penny in PR64 Red & Brown, the threepence in PR65, the sixpence in PR64, the shilling in PR64 and the florin in PR63.

A prestigious, historic opportunity for one of our clients, this is the first example of the 1938 Proof Set we have offered in more than two decades.

A wonderful opportunity to complete the 1938 Proof Set, we are proud to present the 1938 Crown Proof! Featuring a light golden-grey toned patina, with underlying mint bloom and slight iridescence, this superb example is one of EIGHTEEN 1938 Crown Proofs struck. With perhaps as few as ten offerings of this great Australian rarity in the last 50 years, the chance to own the 1938 Crown Proof must not be ignored.
