Description:

The island-state of Aegina is thought to have issued the first coins in Europe, in about 700BC, with that first type being the Turtle Silver Stater.

Reflecting its status as a maritime power, Aegina chose the turtle for its coinage, and the Turtle Silver Stater rivaled the Athens Silver Owl as the 'international currency of antiquity'. Part of one of the most important, most historic series in numismatics, the Aegina Turtle Stater before you was struck from 510-485BC.

A chunky silver issue, measuring approximately 19mm-21mm, we have just a few examples of this revered 2,500-year-old coin in Fine condition.
