  • Large scale replica of the rare 1919 Square Kookaburra Pattern
  • Limited mintage of just 1,919!
  • Measures 90mm x 90mm, weighing nearly 5oz
  • Set in an informative portfolio with information on the Kookaburra Pattern
  • Portfolio size 250mm x 210mm

As a consequence of a Commonwealth Government initiative to find a lighter and more durable alternative to the copper penny, a variety of different Kookaburra Pattern coins were struck during the years 1919 to 1921. The total number of Pattern coins struck was approximately 200 all square in shape and between 14-18mm in diameter.

Unfortunately, Treasurer William Watt who initiated the Square Kookaburra Pattern later resigned following a dispute with Australian Prime Minister Billy Hughes. His successor did not have the same enthusiasm for the project and the planned Square Penny stopped being produced in 1921.

This limited-edition Centenary Tribute to the Square Kookaburra Penny Pattern provides an insight to a coin ‘that might have been’.
