The short-lived 1938 Sheehan/McFarlane £1 banknote is not only the first Australian £1 note of wartime monarch, George VI – it is the rarest of the king’s reign.

A key element of Australia’s currency heritage, the first George VI £1 note was first issued just months before the world was engulfed by war. Unique, this note was the only Australian £1 note to bear the signatures of Sheehan/McFarlane. It was also the only George VI £1 to feature the signature combination in the same colour as the notes, with subsequent notes bearing black signatures.

Beyond its distinctive nature, the Sheehan/McFarlane £1 is renowned for scarcity. Issued in low numbers to accommodate a small pre-WWII population, the £1 is increasingly scarce in any grade.

A wonderful opportunity to hold Australia’s WWII history in your hands, we have just a few examples of the 1938 Sheehan/McFarlane £1 in Fine to Very Fine. Click add to cart now!
