As Australia’s lowest banknote denomination, the 10/- suffered an extremely high rate of circulation. As a result, the 10/- note enjoyed a lifespan in circulation of approximately a year. The Commonwealth regularly withdrew banknotes from circulation, with literally millions being destroyed in the Treasury furnace. By 1954, an average of 2,000,000 notes suffered this fiery fate every week!
First issued in the year of the king’s untimely demise, and carrying the signatures of Coombs/Wilson, the last George VI 10/- note was no exception to the rule. As a result, this landmark issue is very scarce in the upper echelons of quality – and very seldom offered in Consecutive Pair format.
