The predecessor to the Sovereign, the Guinea was Britain's premier gold coin at the end of the 18th century. Circulating around the globe, the coin was paramount to colonial Australia, and was naturally included in the Currency Proclamation of 1800 - an attempt to regulate the values of the wild mix of foreign coins circulating in the colony's shambolic economy. The presence of the Guinea in what was Australia's first official currency system makes this a most desirable artefact of our earliest history - regardless of the grade.

A spectacular example, this coin clearly avoided the rigours of circulation. Defined by strong detail in the portrait of George III, and a glittering, reflective Shield motif on the reverse, the 1772 Gold Guinea available here has been graded by NGC at AU58 - the equivalent of about Uncirculated condition. An extremely rare piece of early Australiana, we have seldom seen a finer example of this important colonial coin.
