Australia’s first locally struck coins, the 1813 Holey Dollar and Dump were part of an attempt by Governor Lachlan Macquarie to retain currency in the colony. Macquarie procured 40,000 Spanish Silver Dollars and had ex-convict William Henshall punch the centre from each. Henshall also created the dies used to counterstrike what were now two separate coins.

The 1813 Holey Dollar and Dump were the lifeblood of the colonial economy until the 1820s, before legal tender status was withdrawn in 1829. As a result, most Holey Dollars were either swapped for British currency or melted for the silver. A major research project in the late 1980s established that there were 276 surviving examples of the 1813 Holey Dollar. Of that tiny number, most circulated extensively in early colonial Australia, and are very well worn. The coin before you is an obvious and dramatic exception to the rule.

The third earliest dated Holey Dollar, with the host coin struck in 1777, this Holey Dollar is a spectacular example. One of only thirty-two Holey Dollars struck from coins of King Charles III, the host coin clearly did not circulate terribly much before finding its way to Australia. Both the coin and the sharply detailed ‘1813 New South Wales’ and ‘Five Shillings’ counterstamps are graded Extremely Fine.

Remarkably, this is one of very few occasions that this particular coin has appeared on the market in more than a century. Offered at the Jacques
Schulman Sale in the Netherlands in March 1914, this spectacular rarity remained in the same family for over 100 years. It emerged onto the
market at the official auction of the 2016 World Money Fair in Berlin, held by world-famous auctioneers Künker, and was brought home to Australia by the Downie Family.

An astonishing opportunity for the serious collector, this is your chance to take your collection to an entirely different level. Owning an 1813 Holey Dollar is one thing – to own one of the finest known 1813 Holey Dollars is a truly breathtaking proposition.
