One of Australia’s most important rarities

A compelling combination of rich colonial history and unquestionable rarity, the 1813 New South Wales Holey Dollar is one of Australia’s most important, most desirable coins. Provenanced to the Bostonian Collection, this recently discovered example gives you the chance to become one of the few to own this great Australian icon.

Australia’s first locally produced coin

Australia’s first locally struck coins, the 1813 NSW Holey Dollar and Dump were part of an attempt by Governor Lachlan Macquarie to retain currency in the colony. Macquarie procured 40,000 Spanish Silver Dollars and had ex-convict William Henshall punch the centre from each. Henshall also created the dies used to counterstrike what were now two separate coins.

One of less than 300 known examples…

The lifeblood of the economy until the 1820s, legal tender status was withdrawn in 1829, and most Holey Dollars were either swapped for British currency or melted for the silver. One of less than 300 Holey Dollars remaining in existence, the coin before you was struck in Potosi, Bolivia in 1798 during the reign of Charles IV. Importantly, less than 10% of surviving Holey Dollars were struck at this particular colonial mint.
