Joseph Harrold and Daniel Harrold were both born in the old market town of Olney in Buckinghamshire, England, born to miller Joseph Harrold snr and his wife Jane.

Prior to setting up shop in Adelaide, a young Joseph had sailed to South Africa to seek the possibility of a better life and business adventures, however he returned to England only after a few months, fruitless! Deciding to seek out new opportunities in the young South Australian colony, the two young men set sail on the Royal Archer arriving in Adelaide in January 1848. A short time after landing the brothers started a hardware business partnership as Harrold Brothers, Ironmongers in a small shop on Hindley Street in Adelaide.

The brothers did very well with their business and their investments. Also partnering up with Walter Duffield as Duffield, Harrold and Company (later Duffield, Harrold and Hurd), as well as having interests in other business within the South Australian and New South Wales colonies.

In 1857 Joseph Harrold moved to London permanently, and established a branch of Harrold Brothers at 29 Great St. Helens, London, very close to the Liverpool Street station. Leaving younger brother Daniel in charge of their South Australian business.
