An essential component of every Australian collection, the Sydney Mint Sovereign is a genuine artefact of Australia's Gold Rush - history you can hold in your hands! Thanks to the discovery of the Swiss Bank Sovereign Hoard - an incredible cache of Australian gold found in a bank vault in Switzerland - Downies had the opportunity to hand-select premium examples of the famous 1866 Sydney Mint Sovereign Type II to offer our customers. This collector favourite is scarcely seen in higher grades, but thanks to the Hoard, is now available in enchanting Extremely Fine.

Struck at the historic Sydney Mint

Australia's first sovereign type, struck as a direct result of the Gold Rush, the Sydney Mint Sovereign was originally deemed as official legal tender in New South Wales only. Despite this, the coin was quickly accepted in other Australian colonies and, indeed, as far afield as Britain, India, Hong Kong and Newfoundland!

From colonial coin to international commodity

As a result of the Sydney Mint Sovereign's popularity, Britain was forced to declare the Sydney Mint Sovereign to be legal tender beyond the colonies in 1866, transforming the coin from circulating currency to international commodity. Sovereigns were traded extensively across the globe, to satisfy international debt after WWI, for example. Therefore it is actually not that surprising that large hoard finds of this Australian Gold Rush relic occur in seemingly unlikely places.

Scarce in premium grade

Rarely seen in the upper echelons of quality, we are delighted to offer collectors the 1866 Sydney Mint Sovereign from the Swiss Bank Hoard in Extremely Fine. With strictly limited numbers, decisive action is a must.
