An essential component of every Australian collection, the Sydney Mint Sovereign is a genuine artefact of Australia's Gold Rush – history you can hold in your hands! Desirable in any condition, we have key date 1866 Sydney Mint Sovereign available in spellbinding, near-flawless about Uncirculated condition!
Struck in Sydney – accepted worldwide!
Australia's first sovereign type, struck as a direct result of the Gold Rush, the Sydney Mint Sovereign was originally deemed official legal tender in New South Wales only. Despite this, the coin was quickly accepted in other Australian colonies and, indeed, as far afield as Britain, India, Hong Kong and Newfoundland!
From circulating coin to international commodity…
As a result of the popularity of the coin, Britain was forced to declare the Sydney Mint Sovereign to be legal tender beyond the colonies in 1866. This transformed the coin from circulating currency to international commodity. As a result, the Sydney Mint Sovereign was struck in greater number to satisfy demand – particularly from India.
Rare in premium grade…
Although the 1866 Sydney Mint Sovereign has the largest mintage of the 1855-70 Sydney Mint Sovereign Series, huge numbers were dispatched overseas – never to return to Australian shores. With so many sovereigns melted down in the aftermath of the First World War, when gold ceased to be used in circulation, coins such as the 1866 Sydney Mint Sovereign are inevitably extremely scarce today – and undeniably rare when found in the upper echelons of quality.
Superb about Uncirculated quality!
Rarely seen in the sensational state of preservation apparent here, the 1866 Sydney Mint Sovereign is a must-have when graded AU55 – the equivalent of about Uncirculated condition. Don’t miss this golden opportunity! Click add to cart now!
