One of just five known examples

Issued by the founder of the Victorian town of Echuca, the Hopwood’s Ferry £1 is a great Australian colonial rarity. Indeed, this note is known by just five or six examples!

Sentenced to 14 years transportation to Australia for receiving stolen goods, Henry Hopwood rose from convict to wealthy, successful, respected businessman. Known as the Father of Echuca, Hopwood’s entrepreneurial spirit extended to the issue of private promissory notes.

A genuine note, graded VG, the Hopwood’s Ferry £1 offered here is a compelling piece of early Australiana. Also recognised as a rarity of the highest order, only five or six examples of the large 240mm x 140mm Hopwood’s Ferry £1 are known to exist
