150th Anniversary tribute…

Celebrating a key landmark in Australian currency history, this set marks the 150th anniversary of Australia’s first Queen Victoria Young Head Gold Sovereigns. The perfect partnership, the set unites the Sydney Mint’s 1871S Young Head St George Sovereign with an 1871S Young Head Shield Sovereign – both graded Very Fine.

A key moment in Australian currency history…

Australia’s first official mint, the Sydney Branch of the Royal Mint struck its first sovereigns in 1855. Known as ‘Sydney Mint Sovereigns’, and bearing distinctively Australian designs, Australia’s first sovereign type was issued until 1870. In 1871, however, the Royal Mint directed the Sydney Mint to replace the ‘colonial’ designs with ‘traditional’ British sovereign motifs. The Sydney Mint was given the option to strike either St George or Shield Sovereigns – or both – and decided to strike both.

Classic types – admired worldwide…

The obverse of the Sydney Mint’s new sovereigns carried the majestic Young Head portrait of Queen Victoria – designed by Royal Mint engraver, William Wyon. The reverse designs of the Mint’s new types were distinguished by the timeless beauty of Benedetto Pistrucci’s St George & the Dragon design and the armorial magnificence of JB Merlen’s Shield motif respectively. These designs are now considered to be among the most famous, most internationally admired coinage designs in history.

Extremely scarce, highly sought after…

With so many coins melted for the gold value in the 150 years since they were struck, both the 1871S St George & 1871S Shield Sovereigns are scarce today – especially the St George type. Indeed, the 1871S St George has one of the highest values, and is among the most sought after dates of the entire 1871-87 Young Head St George Series!

Immediate action essential!

The limited edition of the 1871S Young Head St George & Shield Gold Sovereign Pair is just FIFTY sets – each set in a timber case with a numbered Certificate of Authenticity. With so few issued, and these coins so sought after as ‘the first of their kind’, immediate action is essential. Click add to cart now!
