Historic, highly desirable and hotly pursued by sovereign collectors across the world, the 1872M St George Sovereign is a true icon of the Australian 1855-1931 Sovereign Series.

Established directly as a result of the Gold Rush, the Melbourne Mint was launched in 1872, and used both Shield and St George motifs in sovereign production. The combined mintage of the two types was just 748,000 sovereigns in 1872 - the Mint's lowest annual issue from 1872 until 1919. Although there is no individual 1872 St George Sovereign mintage recorded, this historic first-issue date is considered scarce in better grade.

We have just a few examples of this key date available in good Very Fine quality - each set within an impressive timber case with a Certificate of Authenticity.
