The Queen Victoria Veiled Head Half Sovereign Series ran from 1893 to 1900. During that time, Australia’s Sydney Mint struck only three dates – 1893, 1897 and the final date, 1900. Very scarce today, all three are included in this complete set!
All branches of the Royal Mint – including that domiciled in Sydney – were somewhat reluctant to produce the half sovereign due to the difficulty in striking the coin compared to the larger sovereign. This reluctance meant – in combination with other factors – that the mintages of Sydney Mint half sovereigns are very low.
In addition, as the lowest gold denomination, the half sovereign was subject to a high rate of circulation, meaning that a huge number were withdrawn due to wear and then re-coined by the Australian government. With so many half sovereigns also melted down for the intrinsic value by private profiteers, it is no surprise that all Sydney Mint half sovereigns are extremely scarce and highly sought after worldwide – including the three dates bearing the distinguished Veiled Head portrait of Queen Victoria.
A wonderful opportunity to secure these key half sovereign dates, we have only a handful of Queen Victoria 1893-1900 Sydney Mint Complete Gold Half Sovereign 3-Coin Sets available. Click add to cart now!
