Although the Australian colonies united at Federation in 1901, it took nearly a decade for our first coinage issue. Struck at the Royal Mint, the nation's first coins comprised the 1910 shilling, along with the sixpence, threepence and florin. These were all issued with the portrait of the then-monarch, Edward VII. Sadly though, the King passed away later that year - leaving these four coins as the only Australian issues ever struck in his likeness.

Australia's first shilling was struck by the Royal Mint, London. It was issued in reasonable numbers for Australia's population at the time. However, the passage of time has made it difficult to find examples of the 1910 Shilling in premium grade. It is unquestionably rare in Choice Uncirculated quality, as here!
