Although the Australian colonies united at Federation in 1901, it took nearly a decade for our first coinage issue. Struck at the Royal Mint, the nation's first coins comprised the 1910 threepence, along with the sixpence, shilling and florin. These coins were issued under the reign of King Edward VII. Sadly, however, the King passed away later that year. As a result, the 1910 Threepence is the only Australian coin in that denomination to bear his portrait.

While these first coins were not issued in small numbers, the 100+ years following their issue has made it increasingly difficult to find premium grade examples. The 1910 Threepence is scarce in Choice Uncirculated condition, as here!
