The History of Maundy Money

The tradition of Maundy Money springs from a religious service held on Maundy Thursday – the Thursday before Easter Sunday. The original Maundy Service saw church officials wash the feet of the poor, and this ultimately evolved into the reigning English monarch giving gifts and coins to worthy recipients. The monetary gift became known as Maundy Money. The reign of Charles II (1660-85) was a key moment in the history of Maundy Money, as it was at this time that the Maundy issue first comprised the sterling silver penny, twopence, threepence & fourpence coins. Charles II began a grand tradition, with Maundy Sets issued under every monarch since.
