First florin date struck on Australian shores!

A symbol of Australia’s burgeoning national identity, issued soon after the nation’s baptism of fire at Gallipoli, the 1916M Florin was the very first of its denomination struck on Australian shores. All previous florin dates, beginning with the 1910, had been struck at either the Royal Mint, London or the Heaton Mint, Birmingham. As with virtually all the early dates in Australia’s first national currency system, the historic 1916M Florin is exceptionally rare in the upper echelons of quality.

The first of only four florin dates to carry the M mintmark of the Melbourne Mint, and known by a tiny mintage of just 2.75m, this particular 1916M Florin has been graded by PCGS at MS63 – the equivalent of Choice Uncirculated quality! Uniting bright, lustrous surfaces with fantastic detail in the designs – particularly evident in the sharply struck portrait of King George V – the 1916M Florin is undeniably rare in this outstanding state of preservation.
