Issued in the penultimate year of the First World War, the King George V 1917 Year Set offers the collector a unique pathway to some of Australia's most important history.

Comprising the coins that would have been found in the pockets of those who marched off in defence of the Empire, and those they left behind, this set includes the 1917I halfpenny and 1917I penny, united with the sterling silver 1917M threepence, sixpence, shilling and florin. The copper coins, in particular, form a firm reminder of the first global conflict of the 20th century.

Before the war, Australia's copper coinage had been struck at the Royal Mint, London. Due to the threat of the German Imperial navy, transporting coins from Britain to Australia became unfeasible. Thus, Australia's copper coins were struck at the Calcutta Mint in India during the First World War - as denoted by the - mintmark located above the date on the reverse.
