The last of the Wild West Dollars…
The USA’s Morgan Dollar is known as known as ‘the Wild West Dollar’. The series ran from 1878 until 1904, until unexpectedly revived for just one year in 1921. The 1921 Morgan Silver Dollar is therefore known as ‘the last of the Wild West Dollars’.
In the post-WWI period, the US Government needed to strike silver coins to act as backing for silver certificate banknotes, before the transition to the soon-to-be-released Peace Dollar. Unfortunately, the US Mint had destroyed original dies, and therefore had to create new dies. As a result, the 1921 Morgan Dollar is noticeably different than the Morgan Dollars issued from 1878 to 1904, and is a unique, one-year-only type.
