The 1923 Halfpenny is a coin shrouded in mystery. Exactly why it is so scarce is difficult to establish, but the fact remains that this copper icon must have been struck in very limited numbers. Today, it is rightly considered a great Australian rarity - and especially rare in the gVF condition seen here!

Given that records show that 1,113,600 halfpenny coins were struck during 1923, the obvious question is why is this date so rare? The theory that the Sydney Mint struck a majority of the 1923 mintage using 1922 dies has been scotched in recent years.

This is in part due to the discovery that the very future of the Mint was only decided in December of 1923, meaning that the 1923 Halfpenny must have been struck at the Melbourne Mint.

It is now believed that the rarity of the coin was caused by difficulties the Mint experienced with its 1923 dies. The two pairs of dies used by the Mint exhibited faults - as evidenced by the huge percentage of 1923-dated halfpence bearing die-cracks - and it is thought that the dies failed early in the piece, and were used to strike only a limited number of coins in fulfilment of Commonwealth orders.

Although the actual mintage of the 1923 Halfpenny will never be known, most authorities estimate that no more than 15,000 were struck, with significantly less in existence today. As Australia's lowest denomination, and therefore suffering the highest circulation rate, the 1923 Halfpenny is usually only found in well-worn condition, making opportunities such as this very rare, and immensely important.
