Issued to commemorate two landmark anniversaries, the 1934-35 Centenary Florin suffered cruelly at the hands of a failing economy. However, this Depression-era beauty is prized by collectors today for its history and scarcity.

Pairing a provocative reverse design with an obverse portrait never used again in Australian coinage, the 1934-35 Centenary Florin is a visual feast. The reverse motif by George Kruger Gray depicts a naked man, riding a horse and carrying a torch. It is unashamedly symbolic. The torch represents knowledge, the raised foot of the horse indicates progress, and the muscular physique of the man embodies a prosperous future. Needless to say, the design divided opinion upon its release.

The coin was to be sold to members of the public for three shillings apiece to help cover the costs of the centenary celebrations. Unfortunately though, the impact of the Great Depression was still being felt across the globe. Most people weren't willing to part with three shillings for the sake of an extravagance like a commemorative coin. With sales low, 21,000 coins of the original mintage of 75,000 were sent to the melting pot. Just 54,000 remained, and this unique, one-year-only type is very scarce today - particularly in premium grade, as presented here.
