A natural, commanding centrepiece for every Australian collection, the 1937 Crown and 1938 Crown are two of the most desirable coins of the 1910-64 Predecimal Series. This is your chance to secure both coins in premium grade Extremely Fine to about Uncirculated condition!
The 1937 Crown
The first of a two-year-only type, and the biggest circulating coin type in the nation's history, the 1937 Crown plays a key role in Australian numismatics. The only issued 1937-dated coin, Australia's first Crown was struck for the Coronation of George VI. Only one million were issued, each measuring 38.50mm and comprising nearly 1oz of sterling silver. Too bulky for daily use, it was dubbed Casey's Cartwheel – a mocking reference to Lord Casey, the minister who oversaw its introduction.
The 1938 Crown
The second date of Australia’s short-lived five shillings coin series, the 1938 Crown is one of our lowest mintage predecimal coins. Comprising nearly 1oz of sterling silver, the 38.50mm 1938 Crown had a mintage of just 101,600. Production of the coin at the Melbourne Mint was halted when authorities belatedly realised that the coin was very unpopular as a circulation issue. Imposing, distinctive and very scarce, the 1938 Crown is one of the key coins of the 1910-64 Australian Predecimal Series.
The perfect pair!
Ironically, the reason Crowns were so disliked is key to their popularity today! In addition to the history, beauty and limited mintages, the imposing dimensions have made these key dates a must-have for every Australian collection.
Very scarce, with so many melted for the sterling silver value in the 80+ years since struck, this is your chance to buy both the 1937 Crown and 1938 Crown in premium grade. Press add to cart now!
