The first banknotes of George VI

A key landmark on the landscape of Australia’s currency heritage, the first George VI banknotes were first issued just months before the world was engulfed by war. Unique in the series, these notes were the only Australian notes to bear the signatures of Sheehan/McFarlane.

It was also the only George VI issue to bear the signature combination in the same colour of the notes, with all subsequent George VI notes bearing black signatures.

Above and beyond its distinctive nature, the 4-year Sheehan/McFarlane issue is renowned for its scarcity – and extreme rarity when found in the upper echelons of quality. Issued in very low numbers to accommodate a low pre-WWII population, the high denomination £5 and £10 are exceedingly rare in superior grade, but all four notes are very rare in about Uncirculated to Uncirculated condition – as here.
