The 1938 Crown is a beautiful coin, prized by collectors for its scarcity, rich history and generous size. Australia had introduced the crown denomination the year previously, but the coin proved unpopular, and production was halted partly through 1938. As a result, the mintage of the 1938 Crown is very small: just 101,600 of these coins were ever made.

Both the 1937 and 1938 Crowns were struck from sterling silver, and feature a superb reverse motif by acclaimed sculptor George Kruger Gray. Initially brought in to honour the Coronation of George VI, the 38.50mm crown was visually impressive, but proved too bulky for practical everyday use. Of course, its imposing size has only made it more of a hit with collectors.
