The first George VI banknotes – and the rarest!

The short-lived Sheehan/McFarlane banknote issue is not only the first of wartime monarch, George VI – it is the rarest of the king’s reign.

A key element of Australia’s currency heritage, the first George VI notes were issued just months before the world was engulfed by war. Unique, these notes were the only Australian notes to bear the signatures of Sheehan/McFarlane. It was also the only George VI issue to feature the signature combination in the same colour of the notes, with subsequent notes bearing black signatures.

Beyond its distinctive nature, the Sheehan/McFarlane issue is renowned for scarcity. Issued in low numbers to accommodate a small pre-WWII population, the 10/-, £1, £5 and £10 are increasingly scarce in any grade, with the higher denominations very tough-to-find.
