Defined by a low mintage and general scarcity in superior grade, the 1947 Silver Threepence is a key date in the George VI 1938-52 Threepence Series.

The 1947 Threepence was the first struck by the Melbourne Mint in the aftermath of WWII. After a hiatus of four years, during which time the Mint was engaged in the war effort, Australia’s lowest silver denomination was once again produced – but produced in very low numbers. Indeed, one of the lowest mintage issues of the George VI series, a mere 4.824 million coins were struck. To put this into context, the annual average mintage of George VI threepences in the postwar period was nearly 30 million!

With so few issued, and so many either lost or melted for the silver in the years since struck, it is no surprise that the 1947 Threepence is scarce in the upper echelons of quality. Following a surprising recent acquisition, we are delighted to be able to offer this key post-WWII George VI silver coin in strictly Uncirculated quality.
