The short-lived Coombs/Watt issue

Although they were necessarily issued in the millions for a rapidly expanding post-WWII population, the rarity of the Coombs/Watt notes was assured by their short lifespan in circulation. Even in pre-war Australia, with a smaller population, a £1 was expected to survive only 10 months. A 10/- could last 14 months and a £5 perhaps two-and-a-half years. Notes were withdrawn from circulation and destroyed in their millions. Indeed, by the 1950s, 100,000,000 notes per year were being cast into the furnaces of the Note Printing Branch in Melbourne.

With nearly 70 years having passed since the last Coombs/Watt note was printed, and so many lost, destroyed or heavily circulated, it is no shock that the second-last George VI issue is rare in the upper echelons of quality. We seldom have the chance to offer the Coombs/Watt 10/-, £1, £5 and £10 in better grade – particularly the higher denominations – making this opportunity very important indeed.
