Seen by many as the ‘Crowning Glory’ of any serious decimal collection, the 1967 Goose $1 plays a unique and distinctive role in the history of Australian numismatics. Imposing, majestic and scarce, we have a single example of the 1967 Goose $1 graded by PCGS at MS65 – the equivalent of Gem Uncirculated quality!

Spanning an imposing 38mm in diameter, the 1967 Goose $1 was designed by Andor Mészáros – the man whose designs came so close to being chosen Australia’s decimal coinage in 1963. Based on the reverse motifs of his entries for the new decimal 2c and 20c, Mészáros’ Goose $1 design won an Australian Coin Review (ACR) competition held in 1965 in response to the absence of a $1 coin denomination in the upcoming decimal series.

Somewhat tongue-in-cheek, the Goose $1 design was officially submitted to the Commonwealth, and officially rejected. This led the ACR to have the Goose $1 privately minted by medallists John Pinches of London. Struck from 28.70g of sterling silver, the mintage of the Uncirculated version of the 1967 Goose $1 was a mere 1,500. Always the subject of great demand, this Pattern Crown is rare today – particularly in the state of preservation seen here.

A landmark opportunity, we have one example of the 1967 Goose $1 in truly stunning quality. An eye-catching piece, underpinned by flawless fields and rich natural toning, this key Australian Crown type has been assessed and graded by PCGS at MS65 – the equivalent to Gem Uncirculated!
