The 1972-1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 is considered by many Porsche collectors to be the most collectible of the early Porsche production 911’s. Built as a limited-run homologation car to race in the Group 4 GT class of the newly-created (1972) European GT Championship, it was so popular and such a nice combination of race car and streetcar that close to 1600 were built, far surpassing the required 500 needed to homologate the model.

In 1972, the FIA changed the rules for the World SportsCar Championship, obsoleting Porsche’s 917 endurance racer. At Porsche, racing was an essential part of their image and marketing, and thus they needed to find a racing venue where they could compete successfully. They didn’t have the time or resources to build a car to the new prototype rules which were essentially two-seat, enclosed-wheel F1 cars, so they chose to build a racing version of their very successful 911S. The car was named the Carrera RS after the Carrera Panamericana (Mexican Road Race) wherein 1953 a Porsche 550 Spyder took first place in the Small Sports Car class. The RS stands for Rennsport (Race Sport in English).

Porsche’s goal was to take the 911S and reduce weight and increase power. The weight was reduced by stripping the car of any unnecessary “luxuries” and replacing much of the sheet metal with thin gauge steel or fiberglass. The rear 2+2 seats were removed and the front seats were replaced with upholstered fiberglass buckets. Additionally, a modified front valance and an engine cover-mounted ducktail spoiler were added. For power, the 911S’s 2.4-liter engine was opened-up to 2.7 liters which took the power from the 911S’s 190 bhp to 210 bhp. For handling and traction, wider rear tires were added and the rear wheel wells enlarged slightly to accommodate the larger rubber. The car used a manual five-speed transmission and vented disc brakes on all corners.
