The Siege of Tobruk

The siege of Tobruk began on April the 10th, 1941, when a combined German-Italian force under Lieutenant General Erwin Rommel attacked the Allies during the Western Desert Campaign. A major turning point of the Second World War, the siege is famous for the courage, mateship, determination and humour of the Aussie diggers who held off the forces of fascism for an extraordinary 241 days.

The town of Tobruk was crucial to the Allies defence of Egypt and the Suez Canal, as the loss of the town would have significantly reduced the supply lines of the Axis forces. Entombed in their desert fortress, the Allied soldiers withstood regular ground attacks and almost constant shelling and bombing, and, for the first time, halted the advance of the German's Panzer tanks. It was early in the siege that Aussie diggers were famously described by renegade British broadcaster Lord Haw Haw as 'caught like rats in a trap'. Accepting the title with typically irreverent humour, the soldiers became known as the Rats of Tobruk.

The Allies managed to hold the Axis forces at bay until November the 27th, 1941, when the siege was relieved by the Allied 8th Army during Operation Crusader.
