A stunning addition to a universally acclaimed series, the 2020 £2 White Greyhound of Richmond 1oz Silver Proof Coin is a key element of the Queen’s Beasts Coin Collection.
The Queen’s Beasts
Signifying the genealogy of Elizabeth II, the Queen’s Beasts are ten heraldic statues that stood guard at the Queen’s coronation in 1953. Including the White Lion of Mortimer, the Falcon of the Plantagenets and the Griffin of Edward III, to name but a few, the Queen’s Beasts represent an inspired concept for a coin series.
The White Greyhound of Richmond
Present in Britain during Roman times, greyhounds were bred to chase game, and were included in royal hunting packs as early as the 12th century. In heraldry, the greyhound is associated with fitness and skill, as well as loyalty. The greyhound was elevated to royal status by King Edward III, and all of his descendants used the greyhound as a badge. It became closely associated with the House of Lancaster before passing to the Tudor family. The first Tudor monarch, Henry VII, who defeated Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth Field to claim the crown in 1485, displayed it to emphasise his dynastic right to rule.
