The 2001 Centenary of Federation $5 banknote was issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Australian nationhood – achieved on January the 1st, 1901. A unique, one-year-only type, the ‘Federation Fiver’ is the second of only two Australian commemorative banknote types, and the only commemorative $5.
A key acquisition under any circumstances, this important note is a must-have when available as a strictly Uncirculated run of TEN notes bearing consecutive serial numbers!
Unique, one-year-only type
Given that the 2001 Centenary of Federation $5 celebrated the birth of Australia, it was fitting that this unique note honoured individuals who made significant contributions to the march to nationhood. Sir Henry Parkes, the ‘Father of Federation’ was pictured on the front of the note, with pioneering journalist, novelist, social reformer and politician Catherine Helen Spence on the back.
Seldom seen in change…
As with commemorative coins, the 2001 Centenary of Federation $5 note was hoarded out of circulation. Consequently, it is virtually never seen in change today. Even if you were lucky enough to find this note, it would not be in premium grade – as seen here.
