Issued to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Australian nationhood, achieved when the six British colonies united in January of 1901, the 1951 Federation Florin is a vital acquisition in strictly Uncirculated quality.

The reign of George VI was dominated by WWII and the recovery from the conflict, and it was not until 1951 that a commemorative florin was issued in his name. Due to George’s untimely death in 1952, it transpired that the 1951 Federation Florin would be the only commemorative florin issued in his name.

Struck at the Melbourne Mint, this unique type was issued to mark 50 years since one of the most important moments in Australian history – when the colonies united at Federation in 1901. Paying homage to Australia’s Parliamentary heritage, the coin depicts a crown above a crossed sword & mace motif, interwoven with the Southern Cross. Given that this coin was issued to celebrate Australian national unity, it is somewhat ironic that the design was based on the Victorian State Arms rather than the Australian National Arms!

Struck at the historic Melbourne Mint, and limited to a mintage of just two million, the unique, one-year-only 1951 Federation Florin was quickly hoarded out of circulation. Just as sought after now as it was when issued, this one-year-only type is a compulsory element of every Australian collection.
