Issued by the Duchy of Athens – a Crusader state established after Latin defeat of the Byzantine Empire in 1204 – this silver denier is a genuine artefact of the medieval wars between Christianity and Islam known as ‘the Crusades’.

Beginning in the 11th century, and continuing sporadically until the late 13th century, the Crusades were a succession of religious wars initiated by the Catholic Church. Failing to reclaim the Holy Land from Muslim rule, as was the ostensible aim, but more successful in the forced conversion of pagans and subjugation of heretics, the Crusades cost perhaps as many as two million lives.

Seen by some as righteous wars, where men sacrificed their lives for the glory of God, many view the Crusades as little more than a cynical, church-sanctioned grab for land, power and wealth. Whatever your view, the importance of the Crusades to the history of western civilisation is undeniable.

One of the concrete outcomes of the Crusades was the creation of ‘Crusader States’ in Turkey, the Holy Land and Greece. These Western European Christian feudal outcrops all issued coinage, and, as a result, you have the chance to own a genuine relic from this time of immense religious conflict.

Issued by Guy de la Roche, Grand Duke of the Duchy of Athens, the coin presented here depicts a castle on the reverse, with the Crusader Cross on the obverse. Graded Fine to Very Fine, and outstanding value-for-money! Click add to cart now!
