Known as a Piece of Eight, and associated with bloodthirsty pirates, shipwrecks and buried treasure, the Spanish-American Silver 8 Reales also plays a key role in Australian history.

The leading international trade coin in the 17th and 18th centuries, the 8 Reales naturally found its way to Australian shores. Indeed, the importance of the coin was such that it was included in the Proclamation of 1800 – Australia’s first official currency system. The bedrock upon which Australian numismatics has been built, the Spanish-American 8 Reales commands a place in every collection.

A fascinating example of Spain’s world-famous coin type, this particular Silver 8 Reales was issued during the reign of Ferdinand VII – but features an imaginary portrait of the king!

When Ferdinand ascended the throne in 1808, he was immediately pressured by Napoleon Bonaparte to abdicate. The French ruler was eager to place his brother Joseph on the throne in Spain, and Ferdinand was imprisoned in France. The Spanish people largely rejected the rule of Joseph, and, in support of their imprisoned king, several colonial mints created ‘imaginary’ portraits of Ferdinand – including the wildly inaccurate Lima, Peru bust seen here.
