The Spanish-American Gold 8 Escudos was one of a wild mix of foreign coins that circulated during the first days of modern Australia. These are known as ‘Coins of the Proclamation Era’. Used by the earliest European settlers, and therefore genuine artefacts of Australia’s earliest colonial period, the Coins of the Proclamation Era are hugely important from both an historical and a numismatic perspective.

One of the most prestigious coins of the Australian Proclamation Era, the Gold 8 Escudos is rare and highly desirable in any grade. Issued in limited numbers, with many being melted for the gold, it is excessively rare in the upper echelons of quality. A fascinating example of this crucial Spanish coin type, the Gold 8 Escudos presented here was struck during the reign of Ferdinand VII – but features an imaginary portrait of the king!

When Ferdinand ascended the throne in 1808, he was immediately pressured by Napoleon Bonaparte to abdicate. The French ruler was eager to place his brother Joseph on the throne in Spain, and Ferdinand was imprisoned in France. The Spanish people largely rejected the rule of Joseph, and, in support of their imprisoned king, several colonial mints created ‘imaginary’ portraits of Ferdinand – including the wildly inaccurate Lima, Peru bust seen here.

Graded good Very Fine, and unquestionably rare in this state of preservation, we have just one example of this important Australian Proclamation Era coin available. Click add to cart now!
