After the fall of Singapore in February 1942, it was anticipated that the Japanese Imperial Navy and Army could launch a seaborne invasion of remote northern Australia. The 2/1st North Australia Observer Unit, known as the 'Nackeroos', was an Australian Army reconnaissance unit tasked with patrolling the vast and sparsely inhabited areas of the Kimberly region and Northern Territory in order to provide early warning of a Japanese attack. Mounted and highly mobile, the Nackeroos performed a wide range of coastal and inland reconnaissance activities. Once on patrol they were self-sufficient and possessed the hunting and bushcraft skills required to live off the land for extended periods of time. The unit was disbanded in 1945, but served as the precursor to modern Regional Force Surveillance Units of the Australian Army, such as NORFORCE.
