A genuine artefact of Germany’s last days as a colonial power, the 1908-09 5 Heller Coin was an official issue of German East Africa.

The colony of German East Africa was born when the German Imperial government received a request from the German East Africa Company to put down a rebellion in the late 1880s. Ultimately, the colony encompassed modern day Burundi, Rwanda and mainland Tanzania. German East Africa proved to be a short-lived political entity, however, with the German Empire collapsing as a result of the First World War. Indeed, Germany lost all of its colonies following defeat in the conflict, with German East Africa the last to officially fall into the hands of the Allies – three days after the Armistice was signed on the 11th of November 1918.

A permanent reminder of this compelling period of European and, indeed, global history, the 1908-09 5 Heller Coin is graded Very Fine to Extremely Fine. A low-mintage issue, and scarce in decent quality, we have only a small number of coins available. Do not delay your order – click add to cart now!
