Representing rich history, breathtaking beauty and extreme rarity in equal part, we are delighted to give one of our clients the chance to become the proud owner of this near-flawless 1766 Gold Guinea.
The Guinea was introduced by King Charles II following the Restoration of the Monarchy after the 1640s English Civil Wars and the brief period of republican rule that followed. The Guinea quickly became Britain’s premier coin, and was used both in ordinary circulation and, crucially, for international commerce. Of course, guineas also travelled to far-flung parts of the British Empire, with the coin so important to colonial Australia that it was included in the Proclamation of 1800 – our first official currency system.
This meant that a huge if unknown number of coins set sail from Britain, with most ultimately melted for the intrinsic value. Of those surviving that fiery fate, the day-to-day use of the Guinea in Britain means that a majority of existing examples are well-worn, and turn up in Fine to Very Fine. It is the general rarity of high-grade King George III Guineas that makes this opportunity to important.
A spectacular example of this world-famous coin type, struck very early in the record-breaking reign of George III, the single 1766 Gold Guinea we have available has been graded by NGC at AU55 – the equivalent of about Uncirculated condition. The sharp detail in the designs, the lustrous golden surfaces, the gentle toning…this is a coin for those with a passion for quality – and rarity.
With early George III high-grade Guineas seldom seen on the market, the opportunity to secure this great British rarity in about Uncirculated quality demands the most serious of consideration.
