Dated 1788 – and in Uncirculated quality!

Great Britain’s premier gold coin before replaced by the Sovereign in 1817, the Gold Spade Guinea is always highly sought after. It is never more highly sought after than when it bears the date of European Settlement of Australia. Not only does the coin before you carry the date 1788 – it’s also in seldom seen Uncirculated condition!

Struck from 1787 until 1799, the Spade Guinea circulated widely in the earliest days after Settlement. Undoubtedly one of the most important colonial coins, the Spade Guinea was given one of the highest values (£1 2/-) of the Proclamation of 1800 – Australia’s first official currency system. A coin of great beauty, the reverse carries a spade-like Shield from which the coin takes its name, with the obverse bearing the distinctive portrait of King George III.
