King George IV Silver – coins worthy of an Emperor

Struck in the period after the Great Recoinage of 1816, when the quality and quantity of British coinage increased dramatically, the coins of George IV are very much like the king himself – stylish, grandiose and larger-than-life. Among the most desirable of George IV coins are the larger silver denominations – such as the Half Crown.

King George IV spent his life enjoying all the trappings that life as a Royal had to offer. He accrued the equivalent of millions of pounds of debt, whilst his appetite for alcohol and food was matched only by his appetite for women. His passion for fashion, architecture and the arts saw him dubbed ‘the first Gentleman of England’. When he became king in 1820, having been Prince of Wales for nearly 60 years, he celebrated in style. His coronation cost the equivalent of £22,000,000!

It isn’t surprising, therefore, that the first coins of George IV reflected the excess that underpinned his existence – including the sterling silver Half Crown. Unlike his father’s coins, the inscriptions on the Half Crown are found only on the obverse, leaving the reverse free for designer JB Merlen to work his magic. The final design is a masterpiece of heraldic art. Pistrucci’s obverse could scarcely have encapsulated the personal opulence of George IV more perfectly, with the imposing portrait of the king rendered in the style of a Roman Emperor. These inspiring motifs are breathtaking in high grade.

A genuine circulation issue, the 1821 Half Crown is scarce in premium quality - as seen here. Huge numbers were melted for the sterling silver, and a vast majority of surviving coins are well-worn.
