When British authorities decided upon a new 20 shillings denomination as part the Great Recoinage of 1816, little did they know that they were creating a legend. The first coin to bear Benedetto Pistrucci’s neoclassical masterpiece, St George & the Dragon, the Sovereign would become the ‘Emblem of Empire’, dubbed the ‘most famous gold coin in the world’. Some may be rarer, but few sovereigns are more sought after than the first date in this 202-year-old series.

Featuring the classic ‘Garter’ design, only seen on sovereigns issued from 1817 to 1820, the few examples we have available are in better-thanusually- seen Very Fine.
